What is an Artist Proof?

When a limited edition piece of art is printed, typically, 10% over and above the edition number is designated as a separate edition known as Artist Proofs. The proofs are numbered for example: 15/50. They are commonly viewed as more desirable because there are fewer in the edition. Artist Proofs are considered to be more valuable than identical reproductions from the edition, which is why some people collect only Artist Proofs.
